Lake Biwa

Lake Biwa, which is called Biwako in Japanese, is the largest lake in Japan.
It is located in Shiga prefecture, which is the center of Japan next to Kyoto.

Other than the beautiful scenery around the area, it is also filled with history and culture.
As this place is especially rich in nature, it was very important to the military commanders during the Sengoku (Warring States) period in Japan.

In those days, controlling Kyoto meant gaining power of the whole extent of Japan. Therefore, historically, some famous castles were built around Lake Biwa.

Varieties of trees in the area

Since the wind from the lake is as strong as the one from the sea, there are many trees planted along Lake Biwa. You can enjoy a splendid view of the various forms of trees as you walk along the lake.

Pine Trees are usually planted along the shores of Japan. Due to their tall and strong structure, they are able to protect the land from the salty wind that is blown from the sea.
